New River Gorge: Real Estate Markets
With a population estimated at more than
16,000, Beckley
is the largest city in the New River Gorge
region and is also the center of the area's
largest residential and commercial real
estate market. The junctions of I-64 and
I-77 and the US-19 and WV-16 expressways
also converge at Beckley, fueling the
market for homes and business locations.
However, properties among the region's small towns and rural communities are as much in demand as those in Beckley, often as a result of their potential for residential and commercial investment associated with tourism and vacation living. Fayetteville, Oak Hill, Mount Hope/Glen Jean, WV, Glade Springs, and Hinton are all located near or adjacent to the New River Gorge National River, an increasingly popular destination that attracts over one million persons annually. Farther north of the gorge region, Summersville enjoys proximity to Summersville Lake, the Gauley River highlands, and the nearby Monongahela National Forest. To the south and southwest, the communities of Ghent/Flat Top, Pipestem, Lewisburg, Union, Alderson, and White Sulphur Springs are renown for their outstanding resort and vacation environments. Flat Top, Glade Springs, and White Sulphur Springs are also home to master-planned private resort communities.

Residences such as this historic Queen
Anne are being restored to provide
attractive commercial spaces for lodging,
dining, and specialty retail. Now a
bed-and-breakfast, the Morris Harvey
House, in Fayetteville, is one of many
older residences being maintained through
an investment in the New River Gorge
region's tourism industry.
