Southside TrailAn easy hiking and biking trail along the New River following the route of the abandoned Southside Branch of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O) through the New River Gorge. Ruins of mining communities, including Finlow, Red Ash, Rush Run, and Erskine, are located along the trail.
DirectionsNewlyn Trailhead: From US-19 at Glen Jean, WV, turn left onto routes WV-16/WV-61 and follow 0.4 miles north to the first cross-street intersection. Turn right onto WV-21/20, and then left after 230 feet onto McKell Avenue. After another 200 feet, turn left onto Thurmond Road (WV-25). Proceed 5.1 miles to the Rend Trail parking area on the left.
DirectionsBrooklyn Trailhead: From US-19 at Fayetteville, WV, follow WV-16 south to a left onto Gatewood Road (CR-9). Follow Gatewood Road 4.6 miles to left onto Cunard Road (also CR-9). Follow Cunard Road 1.8 miles to Cunard, WV, and a left onto the Cunard River Access Road. Follow park service signs to the Cunard River-Access Area and park or continue on the gravel road approximately one mile from Cunard to the Brooklyn Camping Area.
Notes: From Brooklyn, the Southside Trail travels seven miles to its junction with the Arbuckle Connector Trail, which ascends steeply to meet the Rend Trail. Bikes are prohibited on the Arbuckle Connector, so cyclists cannot continue through on the trail network.
